REGISTRATION OF OVERSEAS ELECTORS OF INDIA
Under Section 20A of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, inserted vide Representation of the People (Amendment) Act, 2010, every Citizen of India are entitled to have his/her name registered as an Overseas Elector (after fulfilling certain criteria) in the electoral roll of her/his constituency in India. The prescribed application Form-6A for registration in the electoral roll, along with guidelines for the applicants, is available on the website of the Election Commission of India http://eci.nic.in
Persons eligible for registration as Overseas Elector:
Every citizen of India–
(a) whose name is not included in the electoral roll;
(b) who has not acquired the citizenship of any other country; and
(c) who is absenting from his place of ordinary residence in India owing to his/her employment, education or otherwise outside India (whether temporarily or not)
shall be entitled to have his/her name registered in the electoral roll in the constituency in which his/her place of residence in India as mentioned in his/her passport is located.
Every person registered under this Section shall, if otherwise eligible to exercise his/her franchise, be allowed to vote at an election in the constituency.
Procedure for Registration:
· Application for registration as Overseas Electors has to be made to the concerned Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) in Form 6A.
· The application can be made either in person to the ERO or sent to him by post.
· If the application is made in person, the applicant will bring his/her passport and other relevant documents and present it to the ERO.
· If the application is made by post, it has to be accompanied by copies of all the documents mentioned in Form-6A, duly self attested by the applicant concerned.
