Under the Indian Citizenship Act, registration of birth of children born to Indian parents is mandatory within the stipulated time limit. Birth of children born abroad to Indian parents living abroad should be registered with the concerned Indian Embassy/High Commission in the country where the child was born.
Birth of a child can be registered with the Indian Mission abroad if either of the parents is a citizen of India upon declaration by the parents that the child does not hold citizenship of another country.
Passports to minor children will be issued only after the birth is registered. If the child is born abroad, the birth must be registered with the Indian Mission within a period of one year from the date of birth.
